Japanese Gift Giving and Receiving

When I was in Nikko, I gave my Airbnb host a sketch of her deck to say thank you, and she promptly put it in a frame.

I didn’t give any thought that she would reciprocate, as she had already given me an origami crane earlier. But of course, she did – in return she gave me this lovely purse, a bag, a keychain and a brooch all beautifully handmade by her in kimono fabric!

As if those were not enough, she even bought dinner for me that night – see photo below!

What a feast!

I am tempted to send her a digital copy of the purse drawing, but I fear she will send me more gifts!!
